The Government Should Not Run Welfare Programs - 999 Words

â€Å"If it’s not yours, don’t take it.† Most of us are taught this at a very young age. For most people and in most contexts, taking things from others is illegal. Occasionally, people will come up with the idea that taking money from others, by force, to serve ends the earners don’t have to agree with is acceptable. These people become politicians, they get elected, and by the monopoly of force they possess, they redistribute income from some people to others. I believe all redistribution is wrong, and that the government should not run welfare programs. The government should not provide welfare to people whose income is below a threshold. What constitutes poverty, in my opinion, is arbitrary. Should a person be considered poor at the point she doesn’t have anything to eat? Or at the point she can’t afford cable television? Should she be considered poor if she doesn’t have access to credit? I would not hesitate to help out a poor housewife who just left her abusive husband. I would be opposed to, however, to pay for someone’s cable only because they don’t make enough money. Thomas Sowell, in a September 2015 article in the National Review, explains how far the poor have come since the beginning of the last century: â€Å"In 1900, only 3 percent of American homes had electric lights but more than 99 percent had them before the end of the century.
